Bowling Column: Local city tourneys loom in the future

It's great to be back among you and I will have more to say about that later in the column, but for now I have a lot to catch up on so let's get down to business.

Local city tournaments for men, women and youth bowlers loom in the near future. The MBA 49th Annual City Tournament is slated for the first two weekends in March, which is only a couple of weeks away. The reserved entry deadline has already passed for this, buy you may still enter any event up to thirty minutes prior to the start of each shift.

Next up will be the ladies, who will hold their 46th annual championship March 25-26 and April 1-2. The deadline for entries is March 12 so, ladies, get your entry forms filled out and turned in before this date. There is no late entry in this tournament.

Finally, the youth bowlers will get their chance to bring home the gold the weekend of April 8-9. The Singles and Doubles events will take place Saturday, April 8 at 10 a.m. The teams will compete Sunday, April 9 at 1 p.m. Parents are asked to be sure and have all competitors at the lanes at least thirty minutes before these start times.

High School Bowling continues its second season. Over the weekend out local high school teams made their first trip outside of the friendly confines to Tupelo. Teams from that area will be coming here soon, so be sure to com out and support our local high schools. Plans call for the full implementation of a statewide championship beginning with the 2007 season.

I have been trying to keep up with the action during my absence and things seemed to be really picking up while I was out. Last week, Mike Cothern, who has been coming on strong the last few weeks, led all bowlers with a big 269 game and 773 series in the Queen City league. It was the only 700 of the week though M.A. Copeland came close with a 691 and Bill Fike just missed making the podium with a 690 set. (Can you tell I have been watching the Olympics?) James Dillard checked in with a 267 game while Jim Broderick Jr and Alan Terral clocked games of 258. Even the Senior Citizens got in on the action with William Perry cranking out a 246 in the Senior Non-Smoking league and James Mitchell blasting a 255 on Monday afternoon.

Shirley Gaines garnered the only 600 series of the week for the ladies by using a pair of deuces to tally a 622 in the Dixie Belles league while teammate Janie Tisdale took home the high game for the ladies with a 237. Several ladies topped the Mendoza Line including Tandee Marx, Denise Rutledge, Gg Settlemires, Debbie Jones, Nonie Embrey, Sue Kirkpatrick, Kate Grant, Eunice Dillard, Mary Siegrist and Lisa Rickles. Lisa Marchand just missed her first career 200, but her 199 game was her highest ever.

Finally, as I said at the top, it's great to be back among you. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for all you have done for me during my absence. I cannot put into words how much I appreciate your thoughts, your kind words, your visits and your prayers. Those of you who contributed to the fund collected on my behalf, please accept my deepest gratitude and be assured that the money you donated is truly appreciated and has been a true lifesaver to me. Thanks also go out to M.A. and Regina for an excellent job in taking over this column for me the past several weeks. Though I still have long recuperation in front of me and it will be a while before I can return to the approach, I look forward to being back among the people I can call my friends. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

That's all for this week. Until next week, I wish you good luck and good bowling.

There's been lots of talk lately surrounding issue of agents. Specifically, NFL agents and their contact with college athletes. Numerous college football programs have been under scrutiny, including a number of SEC programs. A recent whistleblower article in Sports Illustrated has furthered this issue.

  • Taylor Taylor: Changing of the guard in AFC East

Every good story needs a little comic relief. The AFC East more than fits the bill. From Spygate to Mark Sanchez’s sideline hot dog eating to Bill Belichick’s cutoff hoodies, the AFC East is the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis of the NFL. There will likely be a changing of the guard in this season’s AFC East. Move over New England, here comes Fireman Ed and the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets!

  • Recalling McNair’s legend EDITOR’S NOTE: This column, written by sports editor Rocky Higginbotham, was first published in The Meridian Star on Nov. 21, 1994 after Higginbotham attended the Nov. 19, 1994 football game between Alcorn State and Jackson State. Higginbotham was one of more than 200 media representatives on hand nearly 15 years ago to document Steve McNair’s chase for the Heisman trophy. McNair, who was found dead in Nashville on Saturday, went on to finish third in the Heisman race before a storied 13-year professional career which included a Most Valuable Player trophy.
