MERIDIAN —
Remember when you were a teenager and you would attend True Love Waits at church. Well for the next generation the abstinence education event still exists, but in a different form – the form of Silver Ring Thing.
“Silver Ring Thing relates to teenagers at a level that they understand.” Sarah West of Center for Pregnancy Choices. “They can relate because the speakers and the testimonies are from people their age. So they have their peers on stage, and not some 60 year old telling them to not have sex.”
Silver Ring Thing has been promoting abstinence since 1995. The way they educate is by way of a live event, and then a small group resource called Project 434.
Have they been successful? SRT has seen over 180,000 purity commitments since they began, and in addition they've seen student commit to something far greater – over 92,000 come to know Christ.
“It is a Christian group that is involved, and there will be worship. It's great though because it is presented in an environment where they are comfortable.” West said.
The Center for Pregnancy choices is hosting the upcoming event as it lines up with their mission.
“We provide counseling and education to women who are in pregnancy crisis situations. We provide them with alternatives to abortion.” West explained.
West says because of the CPC's mission, events like Silver Ring Thing are imperative.
“It helps us be proactive instead of reactive. Instead of waiting for a crisis, we are trying to prevent them. SRT is a great way to do that.” West said.
Silver Ring Thing will be held at The Evangel Temple Wednesday, February 22 from 7-9 p.m. Doors open at 6:15, and those who are interested may purchase a commitment ring for $20. Otherwise the event is free for all.
“I want to encourage parents to be involved. It's something none of us want to talk about, but we need to talk about it.” West said.
If you or someone you know are in a pregnancy crisis situation, you can call: (601)482-1230 to receive more information.
