Whose mission?

By Hank Garner

The great theologian Paul Hewson once said "I had a mentor that once told me that I should stop praying for God to bless all the things I was involved in and find out what God was doing. That thing is already blessed." Most of us know Mr. Hewson as Bono, the lead singer for Irish Rock band U2. Wisdom comes from the strangest places sometimes.

So often we set out with good intentions to do great things for God without really asking Him what He thinks about it. We have our own agendas and our own outcomes in mind when in fact God may have something so radical in store that we could not even begin to dream about what it might be.

When Jesus set out to minister, He had a ministry concept that we don't often notice. John 5:19 says Then Jesus replied, “I assure you: The Son is not able to do anything on His own, but only what He sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, the Son also does these things in the same way." Jesus went about ministry with this idea. He was only going to do what He saw the Father doing. How often do we even ask God what He would like to do? This should not apply only to "ministers." The Apostle Paul clearly taught that "ministers" were here to equip all believers to do the work of ministry. So as we go about our daily lives, are we asking God what mission He is on?

Imagine a city where believers got on the same mission as God! Imagine how our city would be different. No more quarreling between church members over frivolous things. No more quarreling between church bodies because one group doesn't like the way another group worships. No more quarreling of jealousies and ego. Imagine a city where God's people loved like God loves us. This city could be a radically different place.

Proverbs says in chapter 19 verse 21 "Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand." Join me in seeking God to find out what His will is for Meridian. Let us all lay aside our dreams and aspirations for building our own little kingdoms, because those kingdoms will never stand. Let us all join together to see the Kingdom of Heaven realized where we live.
