Edna Earl Fulton Johnson

CANTON —    Services for Edna Earl Fulton Johnson will be held Saturday, at 11 a.m., at Collinsville First Church of God in Collinsville, with Pastor Dan Pinter and Pastor James Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Macedonia Baptist Cemetery in Suqualena Community with Breeland Funeral Home of Canton in charge of arrangements.

    Mrs. Johnson was born on May 20, 1912, in DeKalb. She was named after the fictional heroine Edna Earl in the 1866 best-selling novel St. Elmo. She grew up in Meridian and moved to Suqualena at age 16 but commuted with her father into the city each day to continue her schooling. She was a 1930 graduate of Meridian High School and a 1932 graduate of East Central Junior College. She will be remembered fondly as a devoted wife, loving mother and adoring grandmother. Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and kept the books for her husband’s business. She was an avid reader and prolific ceramist. Her homemade biscuits, topped with honey from her husband’s beehive, will be greatly missed. Before settling in Collinsville, for the majority of her adulthood, she and her family lived in Midland, Mich.; Laurel; Albuquerque, N.M.; and Greenwood. Her final residence was in Canton. Mrs. Johnson passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at age 99.

    Survivors include her daughters: Judith Johnson Herring (LaVance) of Newellton, La., Jacquelyn Johnson Mockbee (the late Samuel Mockbee of Meridian) of Canton, and Carol Johnson Hake (John) of Houston, Texas; grandchildren: Heath Herring (Kylie), Kelly Herring (Jennifer), Margaret Mockbee, Sarah Ann Mockbee (Samuel Douglas), Carol Mockbee, Julius Mockbee, Dean Hake, David Hake (Birgit) and John Hake (Samantha); 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and her brother-in-law, Lee Arnold Carpenter of Collinsville.

    Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Mark Moore Johnson; her parents, Vera Eula (McArthur) and Robert Lee Fulton; her sister, Hazel Fulton Carpenter; and brothers: Clark Fulton and Willie James Fulton.

    Pallbearers will be grandsons: Heath Herring, Kelly Herring, Julius Mockbee; nephews: Leslie Johnson, Joe Mark Johnson; and, grand-nephews: Eric Johnson, Starling Johnson.

    Honorary pallbearers will be Arnold Carpenter, Ken Cannada, Ron Smith and A.J. Wedgeworth.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Collinsville First Church of God, Collinsville, MS.

Visitation will be Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the church.
