Gloria Jones Shumate

MERIDIAN —

    PANAMA CITY, Fla. – Gloria Jones Shumate, 86, retired director of secondary and adult education of Pinellas County Schools (Florida), passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2013, in Panama City. She was born in Meridian, Miss., where she graduated from Clarkdale High School and then earned her undergraduate degree at Mississippi State University and her master’s degree at University of South Florida.

    Survivors include two sons: Dr. Jack Shumate and Ted Shumate; three grandchildren: Capt. Daryl Shumate, Dr. Byron Shumate, and Jessica Shumate Henning; four great-grandchildren; and, numerous nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Jack B. Shumate Sr., last month and a memorial service will be held for both of them on Saturday, at 2 p.m., at New Hope Baptist Church, 6573 Highway 145, Meridian, Miss. Burial will be in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., prior to the service.
