POPLARVILLE, Miss. — A Pearl River County jury deliberated 13 minutes before finding 35-year-old Matthew Thomas Rickman guilty in the severe beating of a corrections officer at the county jail.
The Sun Herald reports Rickman was convicted Wednesday in the aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer Feb. 12.
District Attorney Hal Kittrell said the officer had several broken bones, including a broken hip, and a permanent eye injury.
The beating was videotaped. The tape was played at Rickman's trial, which began and ended Wednesday in Pearl River County Circuit Court.
Rickman faces a prison term of life without the possibility of parole as a habitual offender. His sentencing is set for Jan. 25.
