DALTON, Ga. —
An elderly man was taken to Murray Medical Center after being trapped at the bottom of a deep toilet at Carters Lake for a little over an hour over the weekend.
A spokeswoman for the district that covers the U.S. Corps of Engineers property confirmed the man fell five feet into the toilet pit.
The toilets appear normal from the outside, but rather than being hooked to a plumbing system, the seats open to a hole where the refuse is treated and left to decompose. Spokeswoman Lisa Parker said the man reportedly stood on the toilet, rather than sitting down, causing him to slip and fall in.
“We’ve had these type of toilet facilities for 10 to 15 years, and he just mis-used the toilet, unfortunately,” Parker said.
The incident happened in the south side of the park. Because there is no running water in the area, “cost would be an issue” in modernizing the toilets, Parker said.
She said the man was trapped for about 70 minutes. It took some time for family members to realize something was wrong, she said, then park representatives were called and had to unlock the door to get to him.
She said the man was “covered in mess and scraped up.” His condition was unknown, and no report was immediately available.
