Alamo marker honors Mississippians who died there

JACKSON —

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A monument at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, honors Mississippians killed in battle there in March 1836 during the Texas revolution.

State. Sen. Chris McDaniel took part in a dedication ceremony Friday at the site. The Republican from Ellisville authored the Senate resolution supporting creation of the monument.

McDaniel says the project was funded through private donations.

A replica of the monument will be presented to Gov. Phil Bryant for placement at the state Capitol in in the coming weeks.

The Mississippians were among the fighters killed in the battle at the mission against Mexican troops under command of Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna.

Their deaths became a rallying cry for troops under Gen. Sam Houston who defeated Santa Anna's army at the Battle of Jan Jacinto.
