Man gets $1 million bond on kidnapping charge

GULFPORT, Miss. — A judge has set bond at $1 million for a Gulfport man arrested Sunday on a kidnapping charge in a complaint involving a 10-year-old girl.

Gulfport police arrested 53-year-old Terry Slater after the girl reported she had been taken against her will, but was able to escape.

Detective Sgt. Matt Thomas tells The Sun Herald she was forced inside a white cargo van.

No details have been released on where the girl said she was held or how she managed to escape.

Kidnapping a child under the age of 16 carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.

It was unclear whether Slater has an attorney.
