July trial date set for 1979 rape, murder

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — A July trial date has been set for a man indicted in the 1979 rape and murder of an Eatonville woman.

After pleading not guilty to a capital murder charge in his April arraignment, Andrew Harris is now set for trial July 23 in Forrest County Circuit Court. He is accused of raping and murdering Eva Gail Patterson in her Eatonville home on May 4, 1979.

The Hattiesburg American reports Harris already is serving a life sentence for a 1981 rape in the Hattiesburg area.

Three men originally sentenced to life in prison for the slaying of Patterson were exonerated in 2010. Prosecutors say evidence from Patterson's rape kit was tested in 2010 and yielded a profile matching Harris.
