Sheriff: drug agent injured in shooting

PASCAGOULA, Miss. — Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd says the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent probe into an accidental shooting at the Narcotics Task Force of Jackson County's office in July.

The Sun Herald reports Byrd issued a written statement Wednesday about the shooting.

The newspaper reports the statement doesn't specify the date the shooting occurred, though authorities who reviewed an account of the shooting said it occurred July 31 while agents were working a large drug roundup.

Byrd said a bullet hit the floor and a piece of tile dislodged, scraping a nearby officer in the leg.

He says the shooting was reported immediately and disciplinary action was taken.
