Tests show drugs seized in raid include heroin

COLUMBUS, Miss. — Five kilograms of drugs seized in Columbus, Miss., in March include a large share of heroin.

Officials tell The Commercial Dispatch that heroin is not common in the Columbus, Miss., area. They had thought the bricks, which were tested by the Drug Enforcement Administration, included only cocaine.

Columbus-Lowndes Metro Narcotics Commander Bobby Grimes says it's the largest heroin seizure he knows of in Lowndes County. The drugs were worth more than $1 million, officials say.

Three illegal immigrants from Mexico are awaiting trial on federal drug charges. They could face 20 years in prison, followed by deportation to Mexico.
