Insurer sued woman for medical expenses

WEST POINT, Miss. — A Clay County woman has been ordered to reimburse Metropolitan Casualty $220,000 for the medical expenses of a Starkville cyclist injured when struck by a vehicle in 2011.

Metropolitan Casualty sued Robbie Norton in March to recover expenses for Jan Morgan's medical treatment. Morgan was hospitalized after being hit by Norton's car as she and a friend biked along Mississippi Highway 50 in western Clay County last May.

The Daily Times Leader reports (http://bit.ly/Rcjg7b) that a Clay County circuit judge issued a default judgment against Norton this past week after she failed to respond to the insurance company's claim and failed to show up for a court hearing.

Norton was found guilty of negligence in November of 2011 in justice court. She was fined $500.
