BILOXI — BILOXI (AP) — Training is a bonding experience for you and your dog, and what's more fun than bonding over tricks?
Teaching your dog how to do various tricks is easier than you might think -- it just takes patience, repetition, and treats.
The American Kennel Club's Meet the Breeds offers dog lovers the opportunity to learn about training from the experts, including the following tips on teaching your dog to shake hands.
n Walk and feed your dog before you begin teaching a trick so he's not distracted by hunger or the need to go to the bathroom.
n Sit on the floor in front of your dog and tell him to sit. Decide on what you want your shaking hands command to be and stick to it.
Give the command, such as "paw" or "shake hands," and gently lift your dog's paw into your hand and hold it for a few seconds.
n Once you put your dog's paw back down, praise him and give him a treat. Repetition is key so keep repeating the steps.
Each time you repeat the sequence, wait a little longer before lifting your dog's paw. Before long, he'll realize to lift his paw up to meet your hand.
