Community Foundation announces range of grants

As Becky Glover announced annual grants on Tuesday, she broached a range of community projects that have been in motion for some time. She also noted a cause outside of the immediate community that’s descended suddenly.

“Our board just yesterday afternoon established the newest fund,” said Glover, the executive director of the Community Foundation of East Mississippi. “It is a Disaster Relief Houston fund because we had a donor who came to us and wanted to do that.”

Glover said people could send a donation to the Community Foundation and write “Disaster Relief Houston” in the memo line. She said a handwritten note would also work, and after the presentation she said the Community Foundation would wire the money to the Greater Houston Community Foundation office. People can mail checks to the Foundation at P.O. Box 865, Meridian, MS 39302-0865 or drop them off at 4817 North Park Drive.

But most of Tuesday’s presentation was devoted to projects within the community.

Wayne Herrington, administrative director of Anderson Regional Cancer Center, said the grant of nearly $600 from The Rhonda Sheppard Hawkins Endowment Grant would help pay for a number of needs experienced by patients with cancer, such as “prosthesis, pain medicine and transportation to and from the cancer center.”

“This will go a long way to help those unmet needs,” he said, noting that the Cancer Patient Benevolence Fund had been set up to help pay for items that insurance may not cover.

Edward Lynch, president of the board of the Wechsler Foundation, said the $1,254.81 grant announced on Tuesday would contribute to the environmental aspects of the renovation of the Wechsler School. The school, he explained is the “first brick school building built in the state of Mississippi for African-American students with public money.”

The grant comes from the Betty M. Lacy Endowment and the Alfred & Lucile Rosenbaum Fund for General Charitable Purposes.

Lynch noted plans to conduct educational programs in the building when the work is complete.
