Neshoba County Fair report: Day 1

July 20th, 2007, 5:30 p.m.

Here are some random shots today at the fair.

July 20th, 2007, 12:30 p.m.

Hey guys. Well, it's the first day of the Neshoba County Fair, so far I've had a blast.

I won't lie, it's really hot out there but fear not, you won't have any problem finding a camper willing to provide some of their shade. I was there all of 10 minutes, and I was already sitting with the Jackson's who offered me a shady spot and plenty of stories. Leluel and Marilyn Jackson are Clinton residents who have been coming to the fair for many years. Marilyn herself, has been coming since 1945. The original cabin was heavily damaged after a bad storm caused an oak tree to fall and destroy the structure 15 years ago.

The Jackson's shared plenty of stories with me, but the one that I loved the most is when they talked about President Regan visiting the fair many years ago. Marilyn recalled the memory with laughter as she told me about her son Chris, who was eight years old at the time, who pushed his way through the massive crowd determined to meet the President. Which he did do eventually, and Marilyn said it was several days later than he finally washed his hand.

That's just two people out of a multitude of annual visitors that you can meet. I have yet to find one person who wasn't friendly, and I'm sure you won't either. Guys, come to the fair. There's not a cloud in the sky. There is a breeze, so the heat isn't unbearable, but even if there weren't a breeze, the people you'll meet far outweigh the temperature.

If your a first time visitor and have a question, then I would suggest working your way to the main office. There you can find any information that you could possibly want. If you don't know where it is, ask someone. You'll be ok.

Also, I was told that every day of the fair there is one cabin that is designated the "Hospitality cabin." These individuals will take you in, get you a cold drink, and I'm sure you'll find yourself in a lengthy conversation.

The drive to the fair wasn't too terribly bad. Somewhat congested when you drive Hwy. 19, but not so bad that I couldn't stand it.

So, really, you're running out of excuses. I've enjoyed my time, and I know you will. The only bad part about the fair is having to go back to work. (No offense Fredie.)

Paula Merritt will be out and about tonight shooting pictures, so if you see her, smile! I'll also be back frequently during the week, and you'll also see Nathan Martin strolling around looking for a good story, so if you don't mind, help the guy out with that. I don't think anyone could have a hard time doing that though.

Check back as I'll have a video posted soon. Well, I guess that's it for this entry. See you guys soon!

5:46 p.m.: It's coming down in Neshoba County ... and by it, I mean the rain!

Well, my Neshoba County Fair 2007 experience (and I've been to quite a few) has gotten off to a wet one.

My trip to the fairgrounds began with a deluge of rain. Hopefully it will clear soon.

I plan on updating the blog and adding a few photos from the today as soon as the rain passes.
