Congressman makes stop at NAS Meridian

MERIDIAN —     As the only member of the Mississippi delegation that is on the House Armed Services Committee, 4th District Congressman Steven Palazzo, a Republican, has been touring military installations and military associated industries and businesses in the state.

His stop Tuesday included Naval Air Station Meridian and Key Field in Meridian where the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery National Guard Complex and the 186th Air Refueling Wing are based.

"I've been checking out all military installations to understand the full scope of our strengths in the state," said Palazzo Tuesday afternoon. "There is a huge effort going on right now in Washington to balance the national budget on the backs of our men and women who defend this country."

The president and Congress are trying to find some common ground with a deficit-cutting plan of $1.2 trillion over the next 10 years.

Palazzo is concerned military cuts will hurt the state's economy.

"This isn't just to the military either but it also effects the outlying businesses and industries that support the military," Palazzo said. "This would be an economic blow to Mississippi with the cuts to these businesses."

Palazzo applauded Meridian and Lauderdale County for their support of NAS Meridian, Key Field and other units. He noted the great relationship the bases have had with the general public throughout the years and said he fully expects there to be an NAS Meridian for the next 50 years.
