Meridian Optimist Club’s pancake breakfast set

MERIDIAN —     The smell of pancakes cooking will fill the air with the return of the Meridian Optimist Club's annual Pancake Jubilee.

The first pancake jubilee was held in 1948, according to Harold Magee, club president.

"It is our primary fundraiser. We have two — the pancake jubilee in February and T-ball in July," Magee said. "Those two fundraisers fund everything we do."

The Optimist Club helps fund organizations and events that are youth-oriented, he said.

"Our charter and our tax status indicates that we have to be youth-oriented," Magee said. "We support everything from Boy Scouts to baseball to golf; Care Lodge, Hope Village, Wesley House. We try to spend our money to make life better for the youth in this community."

The all-you-can-eat pancake meal will be held Feb. 26, 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Temple Theater Ballroom, 2320 Eighth St. In addition to pancakes, there will be sausage, soft drinks, coffee, and milk. Usually the club serves between 2,000 and 2,500 people.

Tickets are $5 and are available at www.dtoc.org or from any Optimist Club member.

Tickets will also be sold at the door.

"It's really become quite a social event," Magee said. "A lot of people come and maybe stay for two or three hours. They eat and then they see their friends and sit around and talk."
