MERIDIAN —
Two young boys took county law enforcement officers on a short, but speedy chase Wednesday afternoon before being arrested for stealing a vehicle.
Meridian Police Department Capt. Dean Harper said the two juveniles, aged 14 and 12, were taken into custody by Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department deputies around 3 p.m. on Old Eighth Street Road and Highway 19 North. The two boys will be turned over to the Lauderdale County Juvenile Court system for processing.
Harper said a report of a stolen vehicle, a white 2012 Chevy pickup, was reported Wednesday morning. At around 2:30 p.m. a deputy saw the vehicle on Old Eighth Street Road and attempted to pull it over. The vehicle stopped but when the deputy exited his unit the car sped away.
LCSD Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun said the chase reached speeds of up to 90 mph before coming to a stop at Highway 19 North.
