MERIDIAN —
West Lauderdale Elementary School teacher Karen Williams has been selected the 2012 Lauderdale County School District Teacher of the Year.
The 13-year veteran educator has taught third grade at West Lauderdale for more than eight years. Williams attributes her success in education to her former teachers.
“I know God placed each and every teacher in my life to prepare the way for me," she said. "You see, I’ve learned to be the teacher I am because I’ve been blessed to have the BEST examples to learn from."
Williams said she hopes her greatest contributions and accomplishments in education are yet to come.
"The greatest contributions I’ve made in education hopefully are yet to come. I give my all because I hope that someday these beautiful and talented babies I have the privilege of teaching will someday make the biggest contribution of all,” she said.
A National Board Certified Teacher, Williams has been involved in numerous professional development and leadership activities, including serving on Lauderdale County School District’s Leadership Team and attending “Training of Trainer Training” on Common Core State Standards.
Williams will represent the Lauderdale County School District in the 2012 Mississippi Teacher of the Year Program sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Education. The Mississippi Teacher of the Year Program is open to all certified classroom teachers in grades K-12 who teach in state-accredited public schools.
The winner of the Mississippi Teacher of the Year Program will receive $5,000 and will become Mississippi’s candidate to the National Teacher of the Year Program.
