QUITMAN — Bob Baldwin's wheels are spinning again.
After a long break, he is back to throwing clay, and firing up the kiln. He has found his seat once again at the potter's wheel to produce some beautiful new pieces.
On Saturday, from 3-7 p.m., he is hosting an open house at his studio, Second Line Pottery, located at 449 Ridgewood Road, in Quitman.
Baldwin once had a studio in New Orleans, Terre Glaise Pottery, but he took a 30 year break to raise a family and teach world history and art history.
He returned to his love of pottery about a year ago.
"There's a fairly steep learning curve, but it all came back relatively easy," Baldwin said. "I'm doing a ton of pieces."
His studio is filling up with mugs, plates, covered jars, candle holders and whiskey jugs he has created.
"I usually do things people can use, but I try to take it beyond it being a strictly utilitarian thing," he said. "I try to make it aesthetically nice."
Some additional pieces Baldwin said he is interested in creating are items for fish aquariums, and bells.
Baldwin said his wife, Edea, is a big part of Second Line pottery, as are many friends and fellow church members who helped him get set up. The Baldwins attend Jubilee Mennonite Church in Meridian.
Baldwin said he may provide a demonstration during Saturday's open house, where the studio will be blessed. There will be refreshments and door prizes for visitors.
