MERIDIAN —
Michael Stewart has been named as the paper's executive editor.
Stewart is a veteran journalist with experience at both daily and non-daily newspapers.
He has worked the last three years as both the north county editor of the Northwest Florida Daily News in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and as the editor of a sister paper to that publication, the Crestview News Bulletin.
"I am excited to have Michael on board with the Star," Publisher Crystal Dupre´ said. "He understands this business from top to bottom and I have no doubt he will continue to push for editorial excellence."
It is not Stewart's first job at the Star. He worked at the paper in 1999-2000 as a general assignment reporter covering, among other things, the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors.
Stewart replaces former executive editor Fredie Carmichael, who began work in May as a regional economic development manager for the Mississippi Development Authority.
Before transitioning into an editor's role, Stewart was a reporter, covering all major news beats, including government, education, military and health.
Stewart has won numerous journalism awards, including several for his work as an investigative reporter.
"The Star will continue to provide the watchdog journalism readers have come to expect," Stewart said. "At the same time I am interested in the local events, feature articles and human interest stories that highlight Meridian and its surrounding communities.
Stewart said one of his main goals will be to provide more local content in the Star's pages.
Stewart graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in Mass Communications from Pensacola Junior College and earned a double major in Journalism and Government/International Affairs from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D.
He is married to Brenda Stewart and has three grown stepdaughters.
