MERIDIAN —
A lineup of musical talent is in place for this Saturday to help raise money for a project at Camp Eagle Ridge in Collinsville.
The event, hosted by a young band, Back Pocket, will help the camp build restrooms. The concert is scheduled for 7-9 p.m. at the Piggly Wiggly parking lot in Collinsville.
Admission is free. Donations are requested for the camp.
"For two years we've been using porta-potties (portable restrooms)," said Dan Fritts, owner and founder of the camp.
Fritts hopes to have a building with restrooms and showers completed by next summer. Long-term plans are to have a dormitory-style building that can house 100 children added on to it.
He said he also has been working on plans to give children with Boys and Girls Club of East Mississippi opportunities to enjoy the camp.
"We wanted to reach out to a group of kids that couldn't come to camp. We want to give these kids a free camping experience," Fritts said.
Back Pocket recently performed on the syndicated radio show The Sucarnochee Revue, recorded at the University of West Alabama.
Band member Jake Moffett previously performed on the program. Moffett, 12, is the lead singer and lead guitarist for Back Pocket. A student at West Lauderdale Elementary School, he is the son of Lee and Stacie Moffett.
Brother and sister Will and Addison Garrett make up the rest of the band. Will, 13, is the drummer. Addison, 14, plays bass. Both also play piano. They are both home-schooled. Their parents are Staci and C.W. Garrett.
Others scheduled to play Saturday include Al Brown, Jason Gardner, Hayden Comans, Faith Westbury, Allison Justus, Kim Wade and Jonathon McCall, Geri Lynn Mendenhall, C.W. Garrett III, and Jay Fritts.
Businesses that have helped sponsor Saturday's event include Mississippi Music, The Citizens Bank in Collinsville, Gri5th Media, Cricket RV Park, Garrett’s, and C.W. Garrett Electric.
Established in 2010, Camp Eagle Ridge is a non-profit camp for able and special needs children. The goal of the camp is to instill the values of persistence, determination, commitment and courage. Attendees are encouraged to finish school and obtain a college education. The camp also is a place where high school students can volunteer. Camp Eagle Ridge provides annual scholarships for high school senior volunteers.
The camp has a climbing wall, a zip-line, and an obstacle course. Children attending the camp have participated in arts and crafts, horseback riding, and presentations by teachers and motivational speakers.
