Mayor announces bid for second term

MERIDIAN —     Mayor Cheri Barry will formally announce her bid for reelection today at noon at Highland Park - Dentzel Carousel. The public is invited to attend the event, which will kick off her campaign for a second term.

    "It has truly been an honor to serve as your mayor for the past four years and I look forward to continuing to serve you for four more years," Barry said through an email Monday. "I am dedicated to strengthening our community. My work here is not yet done."

    Barry, a Republican, and Democratic candidates Percy Bland and Rod Amos are running for mayor.

    Other officials running for city elections in Meridian are:



City Council

    Ward One

    George Thomas, the incumbent, is running as a Republican.

    Brian Keith McCary is running as a Republican.

    Ward Two

    Mary Perry, the incumbent, is being challenged by Kenneth Dustin Markham, Nathaniel L. Pringle Jr., Martin M. Jack, and Terry L. Stennis. All are running as Democrats.

    Ward Three

    Barbara Henson, the incumbent, is running as a Republican.

    Kim Houston is running as a Democrat.

Ward Four

    Incumbent Jesse E. Palmer Sr., a Democrat, is being challenged by Craig E. Houston, also a Democrat.

Ward Five

    Incumbent Bobby Smith, a Republican, faces opposition from Randy Hammon, a Republican; and John C. Harris, a Democrat.

    The qualifying deadline for city elections is March 8 at 5 p.m. at Meridian City Hall.

    Party primaries will be held May 7; runoff elections, if necessary, will be held May 21. The general election is set for June 4.
