MERIDIAN —
Anyone preparing to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) may benefit from a workshop to be held, Saturday, Sept. 29 at Mississippi State University-Meridian, school officials said.
The workshop, which is sponsored by the MSU Meridian Psychology Club, will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 008 on the College Park Campus. The fee, which is $40 for MSU students and $60 for all other participants, will cover the cost of the study guide manual, materials for the workshop and lunch.
Deadline to register is Monday, Sept. 24.
The GRE is a standardized test required for acceptance into graduate programs at most universities and colleges in the United States.
According to Dr. Vicki Gier, assistant professor of psychology at MSU Meridian and coordinator of the workshop, the test is meant to measure a student’s potential to succeed in graduate school.
“The purpose of this workshop is to review the verbal/writing and quantitative portions of the GRE and to discuss test taking strategies," Gier said.
Presenters will be Dr. Lin Ge, instructor, and Dr. James Kelley, associate professor of English.
During the workshop, Ge will cover the quantitative portion of the GRE and Kelley will lead discussions on preparing for the verbal/writing portion.
“Taking the GRE, which is a computer-based test, can be extremely stressful,” Gier said. “The test format is often considered rigid, so it is important that anyone planning to take the exam should familiarize themselves with the format, time constraints and the specific focuses of each section.”
“We encourage anyone interested to register as soon as possible,” she added.
In Mississippi, the GRE is given year-round at testing centers on the MSU campus in Starkville and at several other testing centers in the state.
