MERIDIAN —
A standoff between a Clarke County fugitive and Meridian Police Department authorities that lasted roughly three hours ended Wednesday evening without a shot being fired or anyone getting hurt.
MPD Chief James Reed said Wednesday night that the man, whose name is being withheld due to an ongoing investigation by Clarke County law enforcement officials, gave himself up at about 6:45 p.m. to MPD officers at the Quality Inn on 22nd Avenue Heights.
"When we got the call of the situation, we responded to the location and blocked off the area and then called in the SWAT team," Reed said.
Reed said the man was wanted in Clarke County for shooting into a vehicle sometime earlier Wednesday. Reed said he had information that there were also warrants out for the man's arrest in Lauderdale County but he didn't know the exact charges from the sheriff's department.
Reed said the man checked into the hotel early Wednesday afternoon, kicked down a door leading to an adjoining hotel room and told that room's occupant that he was armed and wanted.
"At some point the hostage was able to escape and they notified the hotel management who in turn notified us," Reed said.
Once the hotel was secure, Reed said hostage negotiators began talking with the man, encouraging him to give up without any violence.
Reed said Clarke County Sheriff Todd Kemp was in the area of Meridian at the time of the standoff and lent his assistance. Reed said the suspect would be transported later Wednesday night to the Clarke County line to be handed over to authorities there to face charges there.
