Bombs being removed from excavation site

By Brian Livingston

Bomb squads from the Mississippi Department of Homeland Security and from Camp Shelby are removing and defusing approximately 20 white phosphorous bombs at an old WW II firing and training range just inside Jasper County.

The range, covering about 10,000 acres, was closed at the end of the war and has been under private ownership ever since.

Clarke County Sheriff Todd Kemp said an Oklahoma pipeline excavation crew uncovered the small bombs as they were digging out a trench for a natural gas pipeline being constructed through Clarke and Jasper Counties. No one has been hurt and the badly rusted bombs will be removed over the next day or so, say officials.
