Coming Monday: The issue of diabetes

Jennifer Jacob, staff writer

Like heart disease and cancer, diabetes is one of the deadliest diseases in America. It can cause fatal heart disease and kidney failure, and can also lead to blindness, amputation, and debilitating nerve damage.

But if well-looked after, people with diabetes can keep their blood sugar down, avoiding complications and living long, normal lives. Type II diabetes can also be prevented by blood sugar monitoring, which can detect pre-diabetes high blood sugar long before the onset of the disease.

In Monday's Meridian Star, Irena McClain and Mary Fortune of the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi talk to the Meridian Star Editorial Board about the dangers of diabetes, the ways in which is can be prevented and controlled, and what is going on with the foundation in the coming month. They also provide information on what to do if you want to learn more about diabetes.
