In June the 22nd Avenue bridge closed, forcing drivers to either travel on the 18th Avenue or 29th Avenue bridges as maintenance began on the overpass.

In April former Mayor John Robert Smith revealed plans that would see the bridge restored with a new overall makeover that was to include lamp posts and art deco style abutments. The price tag at that point was $1 million.

City officials said they hoped to get the bridge finished before Christmas.

In December the city announced that they would open two-way traffic on the west half of the overpass. Soon after this announcement the plan was canceled due to liability issues.

Recently, Mayor Cheri Barry held a special meeting of the City Council to recommend that no decorative monuments be constructed with the bridge in order to speed up the process.

The council is expected to vote on this issue on Jan. 5.
