Setting off the holiday

City’s tree lighting ceremony set for today

from staff reports

The city of Meridian will officially begin its holiday season this evening with its annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, to be held at Dumont Plaza at 5 p.m.

"This is the official kick-off of the holidays for the downtown merchants, Merry Meridian, and the city," said Connie Royal, director of cultural affairs for the city. "It's just a special way for the city to say Christmas is coming."

The ceremony will feature music by the Grace Missionary Baptist Church Male Choir and the Meridian High School choir, and interpretive dance from the Carol Merrill school of dance.

During the 30 to 40 minute ceremony, the tree will be lit by the Mayor's Tree-Lighting Team, a small group of children and young adults with special needs.

Miko Beasey Denson, top elected official of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, will be present to speak and to make a special check presentation to the city.

Meridian Mayor Cheri Barry will be present, along with other city officials, to get Christmastime started in Meridian.
