It is not yet known which of the five suspects who was arrested in connection with the June murder of a homeless man in Meridian will be arraigned the first week of December, nor what their official charges will be but one thing is for certain, officials from the beginning of this case sought the most severe of offenses.
David A. Caraway's body was found in an alley behind the Hope Village thrift Shop located at 2716 Eighth Street, by a citizen who was walking through the area on the way to work. The citizen stated that Caraway, 52, and formerly from Hickory, was seen in the alley on the morning of June 29. The citizen at first thought Caraway was just sleeping. The next morning the citizen saw Caraway lying in the same spot and position and felt that something might be wrong so officers with the Meridian Police Department were notified.
It was determined that Caraway had been dead two days.
This case was presented to the November term of the Lauderdale County Grand Jury for indictment consideration. Because this investigation continually evolved from the very start till the end of the investigation, MPD authorities consulted with the Lauderdale County District Attorney’s Office and Lauderdale County District Attorney Bilbo Mitchell concerning upgrading the charges against 17-year old Antshawn Davis, 20-year old Marcus Anderson, 19-year old D’ Anthony Davis, 18-year old Antonio L. Chapman, and 16-year old Eric Mosley who at the time of their arrests were charged with armed robbery and manslaughter.
"Our plan from the start of the investigation into this incident was to present this case to the grand jury as a capital murder," said Mitchell Tuesday. "But I can't say whether or not the grand jury handed down an indictment on capital murder or manslaughter. That information will be made public during the time these individuals are arraigned."
The next arraignment date is set for Dec. 4.
According to a preliminary autopsy report from the Mississippi State Medical Examiner's Office, Caraway suffered superficial, non-life threatening wounds to his head and face area as well as defensive wounds to his hands. The autopsy further showed Caraway's death was the result of blunt force trauma to the internal organs, which was caused, MPD detectives believe, by a physical assault.
