After being a prison guard and now into her second year as a jailer for the Lauderdale County Adult Detention Facility in downtown Meridian, Wendy Moffite can honestly say there is never a dull moment when it comes to her job.
Born and raised in Meridian, graduating from Meridian High School in 1999 and Meridian Community College in 2002 with an associates degree in Hotel Management, Moffite said she sees a great many people coming through the iron doors that she knows.
"Sometimes they are relatives of mine," she said with a laugh. "There is nothing I can do for them but what my job is. I have to treat everyone the same."
But working as a jailer means for Moffite that no two days are going to be the same. Different people with different problems is the only occurrence she can count on. But the faces, names and the circumstances are all varied.
That, she said, makes going home to her two young daughters that much more a joy. Moffite gets to see the darker side of life while at a different time of the day being able to see the innocence in her children.
"I love my time with my family," Moffite said. "I don't get to do a whole lot of things because money is tight and I have a two-year old and a three-month at home depending on me."
Moffite would like to go back to school and continue her education in the hotel management career area but for now it is work, family and church that gives her the most pleasure.
Moffite is a member of Greater Outreach Baptist Church where Obediah Clemons is the pastor. She said Gospel music is where her heart is and as a member of the church she said she has the opportunity to listen to a number of Gospel groups perform.
"I love Gospel music," she said. "I've met some pretty famous artists and performers so that is really fun."
