Preliminary report out on fire victim

By Brian Livingston

A preliminary autopsy report from state medical examiners said a Clarke County man died of smoke inhalation Friday in a structure fire that occurred at about 10:50 p.m. at the Valley Road Mobile Home Park outside Meridian.

Ward Calhoun, chief deputy for the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department, said the victim was Larry Chapman, 46, who was staying in the mobile home that belonged to family members. Chapman was the only one at home when the fire broke out.

Calhoun said Tuesday morning further toxicology results would be forthcoming in several weeks but that there was no reason at this time to suspect foul play.

Calhoun said volunteer fire departments from Clarkdale, Lost Gap and South responded to the blaze that completely destroyed the structure. No cause as to how the fire began was issued.
