MERIDIAN —
The staff at Walgreens on 24th Avenue wants local residents to take a walk – for wellness and to benefit a local family.
On Saturday, the mid-town pharmacy will premiere its Walgreens Walk, which is destined to be an annual event. The 3.5-mile trek will begin at Walgreens on Poplar Springs Drive and end at the 24th Avenue store.
"Last year, we held a softball tournament and the proceeds went to Relay For Life. But instead of holding a fundraiser and giving the proceeds to an organization, we decided to help a local family having financial issues," said Pamela Sargent, a sales associate for Walgreens.
A goal of $3,000 has been set for the fundraiser. A family has been selected by Wesley House Community Center.
Registration will be on the morning of the walk, which begins at 8 a.m. Free blood pressure checks also will be available prior to the event.
For those physically unable to make the walk, the Meridian Transit System Trolley will make several trips between the two stores. Organizers also encourage the community to be at the 24th Avenue Walgreens to welcome participants upon their completion of their walk. Plate lunches will be sold, with proceeds also going toward the fundraiser.
"This walk is just our way of saying 'thank you' to the community for their support," Sargent said.
"It's also our way of expressing our store's slogan, 'Thank You and Be Well. We help people get, stay and live well at the corner of happy and healthy.'"
Business and corporate sponsors for the Walgreens Walk are Percy Bland of Bland Insurance Agency, Greg Lane of Lane Insurance Agency, The Purvis Clinic and Best Buy.
Additional sponsors and donations may be made by calling Walgreens at (601) 693-1051 and asking for Sarah Bonner, Pamela Sargent, Sandra Shoemaker or Chris Montgomery, store manager.
