MERIDIAN —
A man Lauderdale County and Meridian authorities had been searching for was caught Wednesday evening by officers of the Meridian Police Department.
Linnie M. Swanner, 30, of Zero Road, was taken into custody behind Red Lobster located on South Frontage Road after a short foot pursuit. Swanner was wanted by LCSD detectives for the theft of a trailer Sunday at a home on Highway 145. Swanner has been charged with grand larceny in that case and is facing additional charges from Wednesday's incident through the city for possession of narcotics, possession of paraphernalia, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest.
Swanner had eluded capture Sunday evening after crashing his vehicle near Hamilton Road in Meridian while being chased by the owner of the trailer. But Wednesday, around 5:45 p.m., a tip called in to Central Dispatch from an alert citizen sent MPD patrol units to the area of the Meridian Crossroads on South Frontage Road and Highway 11 South. The citizen told dispatchers they thought they had recognized the subject as Swanner and knew he was wanted.
As patrol units converged on the area, one MPD officer spotted Swanner, wearing light blue shorts and a white tank top, around Ryan's Restaurant at 207 South Frontage Road.
Swanner bolted towards the Meridian Crossroads area when approached by an officer, and was cornered behind Red Lobster. The officer reported shooting Swanner with a Taser gun when he resisted arrest. Other MPD units quickly arrived and took Swanner into custody.
Illegal narcotics, paraphernalia and a knife were reportedly found on Swanner during his arrest.
The investigation into the Sunday incident and shooting is still being investigated by LCSD investigators and authorities with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, said Casey McElhenney, commander of the LCSD's Criminal Investigation Division.
