Clean up begins for Choctaw County HS

MERIDIAN —     Clean up began late Wednesday evening for what remains of a West Alabama school destroyed by fire Tuesday night.

No evidence of criminal activity has been found in the fire at Choctaw County High School, said Choctaw County School District Administrative Assistant Dawn Dixon. The fire was reported to authorities around 7:45 p.m.

According to Dixon, the building's west wing – grades nine through 12 – is a loss. The area consists mostly of classrooms, as well as one computer lab.

"We've just lost thousands and thousands of dollars in computers, books and facilities to disintegrate," Dixon said. "We're just sick about it, but we're so blessed that it's not a human tragedy; we can replace buildings and materials, but we can't replace our students."

The high school is one of four schools constructed in 2004. Student enrollment is currently 385.

School is closed. Dixon said the Choctaw County School District Leadership Team will meet today with school administrators to determine when students will be able to return.

"We will meet to form a plan where we can provide a building or facility to get them back in school," she said.
