Man charged in Monday shooting

MERIDIAN —     Meridian Police Department authorities have charged a Meridian man with the alleged shooting Monday of his neighbor over a dispute concerning a dog.

According to Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the department's Criminal Investigation Division, Charles Demetric Brown, 38, of 915 28th Ave., has been charged with one count of aggravated assault. Brown's bond was set at $250,000.

Harper said Monday an argument between Brown and the 24-year-old victim led to the shooting, which occurred at about 2 p.m. in the 900 block of 28th Avenue.

"The victim was shot twice and was transported to the emergency room," Harper said Monday afternoon from the scene. "The victim was alert when he was put into the ambulance."

The victim is recovering in a Meridian hospital after emergency surgery to treat bullet wounds to his side and leg. He was listed in critical condition Tuesday but he is expected to make a full recovery, authorities said.

Witnesses at the scene of the shooting Monday said the victim owned a dog that apparently got loose and ran into Brown's yard. Witnesses said Brown and the dog owner got into a heated argument. Witnesses said Brown went into his home, came back outside with a handgun and shot three times, hitting the victim twice.

Detectives arrested Brown at the scene and recovered the handgun, said to be a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol.
