MERIDIAN —
Twenty-three-year-old Tiffany Leggett is embarking on a new chapter in her life.
At the end of the week, the Quitman native will begin campus life at the University of Southern Mississippi, where she will take the first steps toward pursuing a degree in nursing.
"I'm excited ... and a little nervous – it's a big campus," said Leggett.
It's much bigger than Jones County Community College, where she received her associate's degree in applied science.
Unlike some of her cohorts, Leggett had not considered a career in nursing until recent years, at the encouragement of her father, Willie E. Leggett of Quitman.
"I was concerned about his health and he told me, 'Well, if you become a nurse then you can take care of me,'" she said.
The caring side of the profession especially attracted Leggett.
"I like helping people and I'd like to think that I'm a nurturer," she said. "I really want to be able to make people feel better when they are sick."
Leggett already has some experience in the health field. She is a certified pharmacy technician and has worked at Mr. Discount Pharmacy for the last two years.
Work keeps her busy, however Leggett still finds time to enjoy a few of her favorite indulgences: shopping, jewelry making and hanging out with friends. She also enjoys singing.
Leggett said she hopes to establish life-long friendships during her time at USM.
"I'm looking forward to meeting new people and learning new things about life and myself," she said.
Leggett is also the daughter of Jessica Leggett of St. Louis, Mo., and has three brothers: Will, Jeremy and Derek.
In addition to college-life, Leggett is also excited about the arrival of a new addition to the family. Her brother Jeremy and his wife, Deirdre, are expecting their first child in May.
"I can't wait to be an aunt! And it's going to be a girl, so you know I'm going to spoil her and she's going to be a little diva," she said jokingly.
