MERIDIAN —
A Meridian nightclub has become the site of the city's ninth murder this year after gunfire erupted early Wednesday morning killing one and injuring four others.
Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobber said Rodriguez Boudreaux, 21 of Meridian, died from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest at Club VIP on B Street.
Four other people were reportedly struck by gunfire but none of their injuries were life-threatening, officials said.
MPD Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the department's Criminal Investigation Division, said at about 12:10 a.m., Meridian Police Department units were called to the location to a report of a shooting. When they arrived they found several people who had been hit by bullets but Boudreax was not there. Police learned minutes later Boudreax had been transported by private vehicle to a Meridian hospital emergency room where he was pronounced dead.
Harper said a handgun was used in the incident.
Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler said Boudreax was shot multiple times in the chest. Harper said a man was shot in the leg, another man was shot in the hand and a women was hit in the torso. All three sought medical attention at Meridian hospitals.
The shooting reportedly took place outside the club in the parking lot.
The nightclub, also known as Fusions and Swagger, is located in what appears to be a vacant building located in a commercial district at 1908 B Street. There are no signs on the building identifying the night club.
Harper said police are examining evidence and following leads. He said authorities are certain there are witnesses who have not come forward yet. He is asking for their help in solving this case.
Harper said the department investigated at least three other shooting incidents that were called into 911 Central Dispatch later in the early morning hours but no evidence of an actual shooting was uncovered by officers.
