MERIDIAN —
First there were books, then books on cassette tapes, then on CDs and now the digital audio book has arrived at Meridian-Lauderdale County Public Library.
Steve McCartney, library director, says the the library launched its new digital audio book program earlier this week. The library has contracted with Recorded Books, LLC., to provide audio books to the library.
"It downloads a book on your MP3 player and you can listen to it just as you would any other cassette or CD or any other MP3 files," McCartney said. "Currently there are around 2,800 books that are available in this format and we will be adding new titles to that collection.
The audio book offers exactly what the reader would find in a book and it will work on iPhones, iPads or personal computers.
The patron will need a library card and the PIN they chose when they received their library card, McCartney said.
To use it, the patron will attach their MP3 device with a USB cord, go to the library's website, and click on the digital audio icon in the top right part of the screen. They will need to enter their library card number and fill out a registration form. A profile will be set up for each patron.
"It's really simple, just point and click," McCartney said.
"The audio book is a wonderful option for people who travel a lot or people who have eyesight problems," McCartney said. "We all remember mom and dad reading stories to us when we were little kids. This is just the grown-up version of that."

The library is located at 2517 Seventh St., in Meridian.
