MERIDIAN —
A Newton High School senior who just enrolled in school last week shot himself Friday afternoon inside one of the classrooms, according to a Newton County official.
The official said the student pulled out a gun during a biology class.
The teacher evacuated the classroom and the school was placed on lockdown. A short time later, a gunshot was heard, the official said. No other students were injured.
A 911 dispatch call about the shooting went out at about 1:30 p.m.
There was no information available about the condition of the student but Larry Gressett, a Newton County School District spokesman, told the Newton County Appeal the student was airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson.
Gressett said the student brought the .22 caliber handgun to school in a backpack, according to an article posted on the Newton County Appeal's Facebook website. He shot himself one time, Gressett told the paper.
The student was a white male, an official said.
