MERIDIAN —
Officers with the Meridian Police Department have a man in custody who allegedly tried to not only make off with cash from a convenience store — but the whole cash register.
In jail and awaiting further legal and/or bonding action is 45-year old Robert Earl Mack. Mack is charged with attempted strong armed robbery.
During the late evening hours Wednesday, MPD officers responded to the Cefco convenience store #2, located at 1400 24th Ave., in reference to an attempted strong armed robbery.
Capt. James Sharpe, commander of the MPD's Criminal Investigation Division, said after officers were given a thorough physical description of the suspect, they determined Mack was their suspect. Sharpe said officers canvassed the area surrounding the store. Mack was located thereafter and arrested without incident.
Sharpe said once on the scene, officers and detectives were told by the clerk and a customer who was inside at the time of the alleged incident that Mack came into the business and purchased an item. The witnesses said a short time later the suspect came around the counter and attempted to steal the cash register. Sharpe said the incident reports stated the bystander in the business intervened and after a short confrontation the suspect fled the business on foot.
Sharpe said no weapon was used in this incident and only minor injuries were reported by the bystander who intervened. Additionally nothing was reported taken from the business, Sharpe said.
The case against Mack will be presented to the November 2010 session of the Lauderdale County grand jury for indictment consideration.
