Multi-Purpose Building opens at MHS

MERIDIAN —     Meridian High School's most recent addition not only will benefit the school's football team, but also the district and general public.

The long-awaited Multi-Purpose Building officially opened this week with an open house. Originally part of a bond issue that the city of Meridian passed several years ago, the building was designed by local architect B.B. Archer of Archer Architecture and constructed by Larry J. Sumrall Contractors based out of Laurel. Total cost for the facility was $2,627,000.

“Meridian Public School District is delighted to have this facility,” said MPSD Superintendent Dr. Alvin Taylor. “We will be able to utilize the Multi-Purpose Building in many ways in the years to come, and it will definitely be an asset to our school district.”

In addition to providing a field house for the football team, the building will serve as a central location for board meetings, classrooms for drivers education students and general district events. Upon board approval, the public will be allowed to rent the facility, Taylor said.

Located behind the south end zone of the football field, the 10,478-square-foot facility includes two floors with the following features:

    • First floor – includes a ticket office, varsity football dressing rooms, coach’s offices, athletic trainer’s room, equipment room and laundry.

    • Second floor – contains athletic director's office, head football coach’s office, Driver’s Education classroom, and a large open area that will host various school events, including school board meetings.

The facility also contains state-of-the-art media systems for the Board Room and coach’s video room.
