MERIDIAN —
A man suspected of pulling the trigger in a shooting, kidnapping and robbery Aug. 31 turned himself in to Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department authorities Monday.
Charles Pickett, the lead investigator in the case, said Roderick Baskin walked into the department and gave himself up to authorities. Pickett said Baskin is charged with aggravated assault, armed robbery and carjacking.
One other person Jimasrick Dixon, is still being sought in the case but Pickett said Baskin was the key suspect because he was the alleged shooter.
"The shooting victim was hit in the back of his head by the bullet but it was a grazing shot," said Pickett. "He was treated and released from a Meridian hospital later Tuesday."
Pickett said Dixon, Baskin and the two victims were riding in a 2007 Honda Accord on Irby Road Tuesday when one of the men needed to make a pit stop. Pickett said when the car came to a stop, Dixon and Baskin allegedly pulled guns on the two men in the front seat. From there the two victims were reportedly robbed of their money.
One of the victims bolted and started to run away. Pickett said this is when the shots were fired.
Pickett said the Honda Accord was found in Meridian at a home on Seventh Avenue. Pickett said the car was pulled up in the carport of the home. When the homeowner came home from a weekend trip she discovered the strange vehicle in her carport.
She notified law enforcement authorities who then impounded the vehicle. The license plate came back from a routine check that it was reported stolen.
"We took possession of the car and have processed it for physical evidence," Pickett said.
