American Red Cross welcomes new volunteer coordinator

MERIDIAN —     The American Red Cross announced Wednesday the recent hire of Viola Jackson as volunteer coordinator (AmeriCorps VISTA) for the East Central Mississippi Chapter. Previously, Jackson worked as a property manager at D&J Development in Petal.

“We are excited to have Viola join the volunteer management team. She brings a wealth of knowledge and commitment to American Red Cross,” said Tinika Fails, volunteer and training manager for the Mississippi Region American Red Cross.

AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Authorized in 1964 and founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965, VISTA was incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs in 1993.

VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for more than 45 years. VISTA members commit to serve full-time for a year at a nonprofit organization or local government agency, working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, strengthen community groups, and much more. With passion, commitment, and hard work, members create or expand programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty, according to a press release.

“I am so grateful and excited to be a part of the American Red Cross," Jackson said. "I have met some of the most precious people who volunteer their time and efforts for the sake of caring and helping others. I get that warm and fuzzy feeling when I see an e-mail subject 'Volunteer Interest' and look forward to welcoming those who want to become a part of the Red Cross family.”

Jackson will be responsible for building volunteer capacity to support all American Red Cross mission related activities in the Mississippi.
