MERIDIAN —
A boy, barely in his teens, has been charged as an adult in connection with the alleged robbery, beating and shooting of a local merchant.
Meridian Police Department Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the MPD's Criminal Investigation Division, said in a statement released Wednesday morning that 13-year-old Antonio D. Williams of Meridian has been charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault. Williams' bond was set at $250,000 for each offense.
Also charged in the case is Robert Reed, 18, of Meridian. Reed is facing armed robbery and aggravated assault charges in addition to directing or causing a felony to be committed by a person under the age of 17. Bonds for Reed are the same as Williams with another $100,000 set for the third charge.
Harper said more felony charges may be issued in Reed's name from an unrelated case.
At about 6 p.m. on January 22, a storeowner in the Acme Plaza on North Frontage Road was leaving his business when he was allegedly approached by Williams and Reed. Harper said the victim was robbed at gunpoint of an undisclosed amount of cash and beaten to the ground. Harper said the victim was shot in the back as he lay on the ground after which Williams and Reed fled the area on foot.
Harper did not release which business the victim owned.
The victim was rushed to a Meridian hospital where he underwent emergency surgery and has since recovered from his wounds.
