Fugitive Swanner captured on Gulf Coast

MERIDIAN —     For several weeks now investigators with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department have attempted to capture a fugitive wanted for larceny charges in Lauderdale County. Twice Lynn Jerome Swanner eluded deputies, but he is now in custody.

LCSD Maj. Casey McElhenney, commander of the department's Criminal Investigation Division, confirmed Tuesday morning Swanner's days of running from law enforcement ended over the weekend on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

"He is currently being held in the Jackson County Jail," McElhenney said. "We are preparing to go down and get him to face charges here."

McElhenney said law enforcement authorities in Jackson County arrested Swanner in Ocean Springs. McElhenney said Swanner should be back in the Lauderdale County Adult Detention Center in Meridian by the end of this week.

Swanner, 30, was arrested Aug. 15  and charged with grand larceny in connection with the theft of a trailer at a home on Highway 145. He faced additional charges of possession of narcotics, possession of paraphernalia, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest.

Swanner was released Aug. 16 but a subsequent arrest warrant was issued on a grand larceny charge stemming from an incident reported on Aug. 21 on Highway 19 North, LCSD authorities said.

At the time of his Aug. 15 arrest, Swanner was already out on a felony bond for an April fleeing from law enforcement officers offense. Sheriff Billy Sollie said because the grand larceny charge carried a sentence of less than five years, Swanner's bond request was not denied.

Three weeks ago, Swanner escaped an attempt by LCSD authorities to arrest him in the 6800 block of Zero Road. Swanner bolted out the back door of a residence and hid in the woods while deputies and canine tracking teams scoured the dense underbrush.

It was the second time Swanner was able to avoid capture by eluding deputies in a wooded area.

McElhenney said he wasn't sure exactly what day Swanner would be extradited back to Lauderdale County.
