MERIDIAN —
With roots in Meridian and experiences all over the world, Quitman Lockley is a unique character.
The Scooba native moved to Meridian in 1953, and graduated from Meridian High School in 1967. While he claims Hattiesburg as his mailing address, he said Meridian will always be home.
Entering into service with the United States Army right after graduation, Lockley served a tour in Vietnam as an Airborne Infantryman with the 101st Airborne Division. After proudly serving his country, he returned home to Meridian Community College, and become a member of the first baseball team to play for then Meridian Junior College — Meridian Community College today. While much of his time was spent on the diamond, Lockley earned his associate degree and transferred to The University of Southern Mississippi in 1973.
“My connection to Meridian is family. I visit my brother and friends often, and usually have lunch or dinner at News Restaurant,” said Lockley. Richard Belvin, owner of News, is a longtime friend of the Lockley family.
For all his achievements, like having been awarded three Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars, and one Silver Star for heroic military service, Lockley remains humble. The father of two considers his children his most important accomplishment.
“My son Trey retired from the Army as a Captain after a medical injury in Iraq, and my daughter K-J is in her second year of law school at Ole Miss," he said.
With a lifetime of interesting stories and unique accolades, Lockley continues to add to his story. After starting work toward a master’s degree in 1973, he returned in college at the age of 60 and completed his degree in special education from William Carey University.
While his time is now spent in relaxation, Lockley finds the simple joys of his routine quite fulfilling. From enjoying his daily cup of coffee with wife of more than 27 years, Jeannie, to playing with his West Highland Terrier, Bonnie, Lockley is living life to the fullest.
“I enjoy working in the yard, hunting and fishing, and impromptu road trips," Lockley said. "Through this process I have discovered that retirement is the best job I have ever had. It fits me perfectly."
His life motto encompasses his positive and uplifting character: “Be yourself, finish what you start, and take the good with the bad. Everyone has their crosses to bear. Do unto others and this, too, shall pass.”
