Peppermint Pops returns Saturday

MERIDIAN —     The Meridian Symphony Orchestra’s annual Peppermint Pops  is coming this Saturday to the MSU Riley Center in downtown Meridian. The concert begins at 7 p.m.

Guest Conductor Peter Rubardt travels from his Pensacola Orchestra to take the Meridian audience on a Christmas journey. As principal conductor in Pensacola for 16 years, Rubardt has led that orchestra to a place of regional prominence.

The conductor  has worked closely with Dr. Bob Hermetz and the MSO Artistic Committee to produce a Peppermint Pops program designed to delight audience members of every age. Classics, seasonal choral works, carols, a blend of religious and secular selections highlight this event.

Music from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite,” Bizet’s “Farandole,” and Handel’s “Hallelujah” Chorus represent a few of the classical offerings. From the pops arena, there are “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” A favorite gospel spiritual, “Go Tell It On The Mountain,” along with orchestral and choral arrangements of carols will be included. As a special treat, Michael W. Smith’s glorious “Sing Noel! Sing Hallelujah” will be performed by MSO Chorus, Cambiata, and Brass Ensemble, as well as many more seasonal surprises.

Tickets are available now and at the concert Saturday at the MSU Riley Center Box office, 2200 Fifth St. Call (601) 696-2200. Adults “A” seats are $25; “B” seats are $15; student, military (active and retired) and spouse tickets are $10. Tickets are also available online by visiting the Meridian Symphony Orchestra website meridianso.org. For more information, call the MSO office at (601) 693-2224.

Information regarding a special Christmas treat from the Meridian Symphony Chorus can be obtained before and after the concert on Saturday. “Singing Poinsettias” is a gift package featuring a poinsettia, Peppermint Schnapps shortbread cookies, Chocolate Peppermint tea and live MSO Christmas Carolers, who will sing selections of Holiday favorites at the location of your choice within 39301 and 39305 zip codes. Availability is limited. Packages can be purchased before the “Peppermint Pops” concert, between 6-7 p.m. for $50.

Following the concert an after-party will be held. The Meridian Symphony League will be serving hot chocolate, coffee, cookies, cupcakes, and peppermint. Photos also can be taken with Santa, free of charge.
