MERIDIAN —
The 21st Annual State Games of Mississippi officially kicks off today, centered around the front of Meridian's newly renovated City Hall.
Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. with Opening Ceremonies starting at 7:30 p.m.
Closings are scheduled for Seventh Street, between 23rd and 24th Avenues beginning at 8 a.m. today. The rest of Seventh Street (between 23rd and 26th Avenues) is scheduled to close at 5:30 p.m.
One lane of 23rd Avenue in front of The Doughboy Monument and City Hall will also be closed at 5:30 p.m. for the parade of athletes.
The fireworks display will be launched off the top of the Lauderdale County Courthouse, which means a no-park zone has been designated to begin at 6 p.m. in the four streets directly around the courthouse – 21st Avenue, Sixth Street, 20th Avenue and Fifth Street.
In case of bad weather, participants may shelter in the Arts District Parking Garage, at the Temple Theater and the Bell South/AT&T Building downtown.
The Arts District Parking Garage will be open for free, and parking will be available on side streets throughout downtown Meridian.
